About the workshops:
ACTING FOR CAMERA AND STAGE:
The acting workshop will explore different approaches to acting and the importance of using the mind and body, to feel and express. Reading and analysing a script and building a character based on character motivation will be attempted. Stanislavski’s magic ‘What if’ and Lecoq’s ‘Levels of Tension’ will be applied to act out scenes. The subtle and not so subtle differences between the screen and stage will also be explored. The workshop will be industry relevant so that the participants are quite well equipped at the end of two days to carry themselves in a professional space.
DIRECTION AND SCRIPTWRITING:
The writing and direction workshop will attempt to understand the nuances of writing/directing a play from the point of view of a performing artist in the 21st century. It will delve deep into the works of path breaking directors like Thomas Ostermeier, Robert Wilson, Tim Supple and Simon Mcburney and will look at the works of contemporary playwrights such as Ayad Akhtar, Sarah Kane and Christopher Durang. It will try and explore how the international language of performance has changed by trying to link older masters and older texts with modern interpretations of the same. It will look at every little aspect from framing and composition to designing character arcs using examples as varied as Heiner Mueller and Peter Brook. It will also look at works of playwrights such as Manjula Padmanabhan and Mahesh Dattani closer home to specfically locate an “Indian” language of performance that has evolved over the years. It will also attempt to understand the technical aspects associated with writing material for allied mediums ranging from youtube sketches and songs to radio plays. It will try to identify methods through which full fledged story ideas are developed into scripts, covering every stage from concept writing to pitching. The workshop will be hands on and interactive to make sure it’s not just a theoretical discussion, but also a practical exercise in creating and executing original material.
*Please note that the registration fees is for BOTH the days. Not on per day basis.
